Texas Brings Home National Beautification Awards
(AUSTIN, TEXAS) - Keep America Beautiful, the nation's largest volunteer-based community action and education organization, recently recognized Texas organizations, schools, and agencies with 19 national awards for their commitment to beautification, waste reduction, and litter prevention.
The Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Awards were handed out during the organization’s national conference in Washington D.C. this December to recognize the best of the best among its network of affiliates and volunteers across the country. The state affiliate Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) was honored as a Diamond Level affiliate, one of only six state affiliates to receive such recognition, for its successful promotion of the KAB mission and program support to local community affiliates.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) received two awards for its support of KTB - the Department of Transportation Partner Award and the Great American Cleanup Department of Transportation Partnership Award. The awards were created to recognize the high value KAB places on public-private partnerships. TxDOT annually partners with KTB and its more than 340 affiliate communities to support programs that remind Texans not to litter.
Community affiliates such as Keep Austin Beautiful, Keep Plano Beautiful, and Keep Houston Beautiful were awarded Affiliate Awards for their successful initiatives to educate the public about litter prevention and encourage grassroots volunteer efforts to clean and beautify communities. Numerous schools and organizations received additional awards for their efforts.
“Our community affiliates and volunteers are some of the most dedicated you will find anywhere,” KTB President Steve Hazlewood says. “They should inspire all of us to do our part to keep the great state of Texas a clean and beautiful place.” Hazlewood also noted that if you look into these communities they are very prosperous. "I believe there is a strong link between being a KTB/ KAB affiliate and economic prosperity for a community."
Like KAB, KTB holds a statewide awards program that recognizes the efforts made by individuals and groups to enhance their community and protect the Lone Star State’s environment. Keep Texas Beautiful is currently accepting 2008 KTB Awards nominations through February 19, 2008. For more information, visit www.ktb.org.
