ANGLETON'S STAN WEIK WINS NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD
Keep America Beautiful Honored Weik in Washington D.C. Ceremony

(Austin, Texas)-Stan Weik, Sales Manager with IESI-Southwest, recently received one of the most prestigious national environmental awards from Keep America Beautiful during ceremonies in Washington DC on December 9, 2000. Weik serves as a volunteer leader with numerous Brazoria County environmental organizations as well as Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. Weik was presented the prestigious Iron Eyes Cody Award from Keep America Beautiful for his outstanding leadership in promoting environmental issues both locally, statewide, and nationally. Iron Eyes Cody, who many may remember as the icon of Keep America Beautiful's 1970's landmark public awareness campaign, is credited with awakening the environmental consciousness of an entire generation of Americans.

Weik was honored for 17 years of service with such organizations as Keep America Beautiful, Keep Texas Beautiful, and Keep San Antonio Beautiful. He currently is involved with many Brazoria County environmental programs for organizations such as Keep Angleton Beautiful, Keep Lake Jackson Beautiful, the Clute Improvement Commission, Freeport Beautification, Keep Pearland Beautiful, and the town of Quintana.

"Stan can always be depended on to take the leadership of a project and get the job done. Those qualities set him apart from others," said Deborah Swift, Executive Director of Keep Texas Beautiful. "He is to be credited for his tremendous enthusiasm and knowledge in various environmental areas dealing with recycling and waste minimization. He also has the foresight to show communities and businesses how partnerships can truly make a positive difference."

In 1984 in San Antonio, Weik created the "Captain Waste" character that allowed him to creatively educate students and adults on recycling and solid waste issues. As "Captain Waste", he has given more than 770 presentations to nearly 800,000 individuals.

Weik also brought renewed attention to the Brazoria County Landfill and Recycling Center. He served on the Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day committee and played a key role in dramatically increasing the number of volunteers taking part in the program. Weik has won numerous awards over the years that have included the Sadie Ray Graff and Individual Leadership Award from Keep Texas Beautiful, the Environmental Protection Agency's Award of Excellence, and JCPenney's Golden Rule Award.
