TEXAS WINS CLEANEST STATE IN THE NATION
Keep Texas Beautiful wins 1st Place in National Competition

(AUSTIN) Keep America Beautiful today announced that Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) has won first place in a nationwide competition for the most effective statewide litter prevention and beautification program. Keep America Beautiful President, Ray Empson said "Keep Texas Beautiful has helped to make Texas a cleaner and more beautiful place to live and instilled a sense of pride and ownership among its residents." The award will be presented to Texas delegates at the 46th Annual Keep America Beautiful conference in Washington, D.C. on December 11, 1999 at 12:00 p.m. at the J.W. Marriott hotel. "Wešre proud of all the hard-working volunteers and partners across the state whose thousands of hours dedicated to community cleanup and beautification made these awards possible," said Dennis Hobbs, President of KTB. "These awards show the rest of the nation that Texas cares about its environment, and after winning this award in 1993 and 1995, Texas is once again the shining star in the nation." KTB award-winning facts included: a 6,223 cleanup events a 383,011 volume yds. of trash removed a 230,842 miles of street cleaned a 4,138 miles of lake-shores cleaned a 146.5 miles of beach cleaned a 3,588 miles of creek cleaned a 424,082 acres of parks cleaned a 1,563,317 statewide volunteer hours a 1,642 community events a 202,977.86 column inches of newspaper a 97,191.5 total radio minutes a 787,717.5 total television minutes Keep Texas Beautiful, the nonprofit state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, empowers Texans through education to take responsibility for enhancing their community environment.
