What is the Great American Cleanup?

The Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program, engaging more than 5 million volunteers and participants every year to create positive change and lasting impact in local communities.

The Great American Cleanup offers structured service projects and volunteer opportunities in communities across Texas. In 2016, 105,814 volunteers contributed 462,315 hours at Great American Cleanup events, collecting 8.5 million pounds of waste and recyclables. Recycling events collected 1.6 million pounds of tires, and 443,314 pounds of electronics. Additionally, awareness events and workshops were held, graffiti was abated, buildings were painted and repaired or removed, community gardens, flowers and trees planted and illegal dump sites were cleaned.

Great American Cleanup activities can include:
  • Beautifying parks and recreation areas
  • Cleaning waterways
  • Handling recycling collections
  • Picking up litter
  • Removing graffiti
  • Planting trees
  • Conducting educational programs and litter-free events
  • ... or anything that keeps your community beautiful!
