1. How do I apply for a Keep Texas specialty license plate?
Visit the Texas Department of Transportation website and click on Keep Texas Beautiful, and follow the instructions on how to apply for your very own plate. You may also contact the Vehicle Titles and Registration help line at (512) 465-7611. Or, to obtain a faxed copy of the application, call toll free at (888) 232-7033 and enter fax form number (0999) and a return fax number when prompted. For additional assistance, you may contact your county tax office.

2. How much does the plate cost?
$30 annually. This fee is charged in addition to your regular vehicle registration fee. From the fee, $22 goes to the state highway fund to support the department of transportation’s litter prevention and community beautification programs. Keep Texas Beautiful also receives a portion, which we turn into programming for you.

This plate helped generate funds to support litter prevention through Keep Texas Beautiful.

Note: There is an additional $40 annual fee for personalized plates.

3. Are my vehicle registration fees included in the price of the Keep Texas Beautiful license plate?
No. Fees for your annual vehicle registration are not included.

4. Is the $30 annual fee charged per year, in addition to the yearly registration fee?
Yes, with $22 of the $30 going to Keep Texas Beautiful each year.

5. How long has the plate been available?
In 1998, Keep Texas Beautiful was given the authority by the State of Texas to generate supporting funds by sponsoring a specialty license plate. The original plate featured what we call the “classic” Don’t Mess with Texas logo. Since then, the plate has helped support litter prevention and beautification projects through Keep Texas Beautiful

6. Why was the plate redesigned?
The original plate had what we call the “classic” Don’t Mess with Texas logo. The classic” logo was replaced by a refreshed campaign logo back in 2000 and we wanted to refresh our license plate with the new logo and increase sales with a new and colorful eye-catching design. The redesigned plate features the Don’t Mess with Texas® Logo imposed over a beautiful scenic highway with the words “Keep Texas Beautiful” along the bottom border. The art for the new plate was selected by a panel of KTB board members and volunteers.

7. When can I order a Keep Texas Beautiful Plate? Do I have to wait until my current plates expire or I get my renewal notice?
You can order the license plate at any time! Your County Tax Assessor/Collection will adjust your vehicle registration expiration date and prorate registration fees accordingly.

8. How long will it take to get my plates?
Just like any specialty or personalized license plate, it will take about three to eight weeks from when you purchase for your plate to arrive. You will be notified by mail when your plate has been sent to your local County Tax Assessor/Collector's office. You'll go to that office, turn in your current license plate(s), and pick up your new Keep Texas Beautiful plate.

9. Can I put a Keep Texas Beautiful plate on a trailer, RV or motorcycle?
No. At this time, the plate is only available for cars and trucks.

10. Can I transfer my license plate to another vehicle that I own or might buy in the future?
Plates may be transferred to another vehicle you own with a corrected vehicle registration obtained from your County Tax office.

11. Can I personalize my Keep Texas Beautiful plate?
For an additional $40 per year, you may order a personalized plate of five spaces or less. TxDOT will review each request to ensure that it does not duplicate another plate already assigned. You may also transfer a personalized message from your current plate to your new plate if it has five spaces or less.

12. What are the guidelines for selecting a personalized plate message?
Selections may not consist of more than five characters, punctuation symbols, or spaces; OR three characters, punctuation symbols, or spaces and one silhouette of Texas.

The only punctuation symbols that can be used are periods, dashes, or blank spaces.

Selections which (a) conflict with the regular license plate numbering system, (b) have already been issued, or (c) are deemed to be offensive, will not be approved.

13. Will the expiration date of my regular vehicle registration change?
Yes. If your vehicle is currently registered when the license plate is issued, your vehicle registration expiration date will be adjusted by TxDOT to correspond with the expiration of your new specialty plate (twelve months from the date you picked up your new license plate).

14. What happens when I pick up my new plate?
You will surrender your current windshield validation sticker and receive a new windshield validation sticker. You will be asked to pay either a regular registration or a pro-rated registration fee (you will receive a credit for the remaining time on your previous registration) to match up the annual special plate fee and your current vehicle registration. Proof of financial responsibility such as a liability insurance card or policy is also required at this time. You will then be provided with your new plate and a new registration sticker to match the new plate's sequence.

15. How does the annual renewal work with the Keep Texas Beautiful license plate?
You will receive a notice annually offering you the option to renew your plate for $30. This notice will come from the Texas Department of Transportation and is separate from your vehicle registration renewal that is sent by your local County Tax Assessor/Collector. Just send in your $30 to TxDOT. You will register your vehicle through your local tax office, and they will provide you with new stickers for your vehicle.

16. I currently have a Don’t Mess with Texas license plate on my car but it is the old version. Am I required to change to the new design?
You may keep the old one until the 6th anniversary of your purchase. At this time you are required to get a new plate due to the degradation of the reflectivity of the plate.
