Arbor Day Poster Contest
Deadline:
December 14, 2007
Texas
Forest Service and Keep Texas Beautiful encourage all 5th
graders to participate in the “Trees are Terrific…inside and out!” poster contest. The Texas Forest Service
sponsors the National
Arbor Day Foundation's Poster Contest in Texas.
KTB affiliates can participate as local sponsors of the contest by distributing lesson plans to teachers, coordinating a community-wide judging event, or providing prizes for the winners. Local sponsors can receive free lesson plan booklets for every fifth-grade teacher in the community by contacting Angie Soldinger at the Texas Forest Service at (979) 458-6649 or asoldinger@tfs.tamu.edu. Lesson plans correlate with National Science Standards and the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) state Science standards. Correlations and all contest information can be found at: http://texasforestservice.tamu.edu/urban/arbor_day/default.asp

This year’s lesson has 5th grade students role-play the growth process of a young tree. Students become familiar with the structural components of a tree and learn how these components help the tree function. For those of you who are familiar with Project Learning Tree, it is similar to Tree Factory. By doing this activity, students will discover the environmental benefits and products that trees provide, identify the structural components of a tree and describe the processes and major components involved in photosynthesis.
Please have your local winning poster(s) mailed to College Station by the deadline so it can be judged in the statewide contest and hopefully onto National! (Only one poster per school accepted)
