Texas Litter Database: Deep Dive Training Webinar Recording

*The Texas Litter Database is currently undergoing maintenance. You are still able to access the Litter Database and input data but you may encounter small usability issues. We apologize as we work behind the scenes to include new features. If you have any questions, please reach out to Karen Maldonado, Project Manager, at This email address is being protected from spambots. Fall Sweep runs from September 11, the National Day of Service, through November 20.

When picking up litter, KTB recommends participants to do so responsibly and at their comfort level. Please wear a face mask and disposable gloves, and use a litter grabber. Maintain at least 6 feet of distance from passersby. When you are finished collecting litter, please make sure your trash bag is securely tied to protect sanitation workers. Immediately wash your hands with soap and water and hand sanitizer after collecting litter. Please dispose of your single-use face masks and disposable gloves properly and in the waste bin.

To help you communicate cleanup guidance to your affiliate volunteers and community members, we have created these printable resources that include our cleanup guidance and how to safely remove disposable gloves.

  • Ready to organize your own Fall Sweep? Here's what to do next:

    Pick a Location

Identify an area in your community that could be cleaned and that is safe and accessible. Come up wiht a plan to dispose of the trash and recyclables you collect properly. Visit the site in advance of the cleanup date to determine where to set up a check-in station, where to leave bags of trash and recyclables and what areas volunteers will clean.

Register Your Event with Keep Texas Beautiful

Use this form to register your cleanup for supplies and materials. You must also sign into your affiliate portal and register your cleanup on our event calendar.

    Contact Your Community

Encourage friends, family and colleagues to get involved and help organize the cleanup. Create a work event or a Facebook event so interested volunteers can RSVP and you can easily communicate with attendees. Spread the word through email, social media and e-invites. You can also print and post these event flyers in the area.

    Resources

  • Ready to start cleaning up? Here's what to do next.

    Set-Up

Arrive early to set up, post signs and label your trash drop-off site. At your check-in station, ensure you have pens, pencils and sign-in sheets ready for your volunteers.

    What to Tell Volunteers

Emphasize the importance of data collection. Make sure group leaders have their Safety Speech, Volunteer Welcome, Volume to Weight Estimation Sheet and Data Card. It is easier to collect data as items are picked up, rather than sorting and tallying everything after you clean.

Establish a point-person to stay at the check-in station in case of health emergencies or any late arrivals.

Tell volunteers what to do with the filled bags of trash and set a meeting time for the end of the cleanup so that everyone returns at the same time. Kids should always have adult supervision.

    Document the Cleanup

Take before and after photos of the cleanup site as well as shots of your volunteers in action and a final group picture with all of the trash collected. You can submit these with your data card or tag @KeepTXBeautiful online with #KTBFallSweep.

If you have a scale with a hook, use it to weigh the trash bags. If you don’t have a scale, you can use a standard conversion of 15 pounds per trash bag to estimate the overall weight of your collected trash.

As the volunteers finish, remind them to review the information they entered into the Data Cards and then make sure they submit! Collect all completed paper data forms to submit to Keep Texas Beautiful.

Ensure all trash is left in the designated drop-off location and that no materials are left behind as you leave the cleanup location.

  • Finished sweeping up? Here's what to do next.

    Submit your event data

Keep Texas Beautiful is proud to launch the first-ever Texas Litter Database. Accessible through any smart device or computer, this online tool enables municipal employees, volunteers, and others to better track and analyze litter collected during cleanups. The Litter Database can be used by any individual or group conducting litter clean-up activities in Texas.

The Texas Litter Database will be used to collect cleanup data during the Fall Sweep season. Community beautification, painting, and planting event data will be submitted with your annual report. You can submit your interim beautification data using the check-in form to help you prepare your annual report.

Report a Litterer

Even after more than 25 years of the Don’t mess with Texas® campaign, litterbugs still roam the roadways, tossing trash from their car windows and letting litter fly out of their truck beds. We’re talking about cigarette butts, fast food wrappers, and the like. They’re small, but they’re still trash.

Don’t mess with Texas® Trash-Off

ENGLISH

Actualizado 6/7/2020

Recycling Resources

Recycling Resources

From schools and universities to households, learn about the recycling programs that we support.

Keep Texas Beautiful supports affiliate efforts in recycling programs through a few different avenues. KTB provides resources and technical assistance to affiliates looking to start or grow an existing recycling program. Due to KTB’s strong connections throughout the state, we are able to connect affiliates with local and statewide partners who are able to further assist in their own community.

KTB also offers recycling grants to affiliates throughout the year. These grants help to get recycling programs started locally and support existing recycling efforts. These grants have helped to support purchase new recycling bins for schools and farmers markets, renovate signage at recycling centers, and even offset the cost to pave a parking spot for a recycling dumpster. Affiliate recycling programs vary widely from community to community, based on the community needs and resources.

Recycling education and resources are an important part of keeping Texas beautiful. This coupled with litter prevention efforts from partners like TxDOT help keep our Texas roadways clean and beautiful.
